Thanks Sandy! I think you’re absolutely right. That quote reminds me of the old “Brevity is the soul of wit.”

Thanks Jude! Glad I can spread some copywriting cheer around!

Exactly! What’s that old journalism mantra? “Small minds use big words.” Not always true of course, but still.

Great advice stated succinctly! The great poet Emily Dickenson was quoted as saying, “I’m looking for that word that says volumes.” Applies to copy writing as well as poetry and the words we choose to tell stories, I think. Hugs!

Thanks for the detailed response! I think you’re right, there’s a time and a place for everything. I’m not militant about avoiding things like parenthetical asides if they work! And you have a good point about regional slang, I’m definitely guilty of that one too. That actually would have been another good one to include here!

I love my thesaurus (and parenthesis) but agree they have their place and that place is usually not in writing for others to read. I am occasionally guilty of using online jargon (LOL) and have to say I’m probably more guilty of using phrases that are common to my area. People have called me out when I termed soda as ‘pop’ in my writing. I also use the phrase “I know, right?” when writing dialogue, but an editor of mine across the pond had to ask me what that meant. I told her never mind, it’s dialogue, just leave it. (grin) Great post!

Editing is key no matter what you’re writing, sometimes the tweaks aren’t so minor, but if they help tighten up the writing then we have to do it. Great post!
